Everything you need to know about Prince William (2024)

Prince William, Wills, the Duke of Cambridge, whatever you want to call him: he's a pretty big deal. And as the second in line to the throne, he'll most likely end up ruling the country one day. So if you're short on your Prince William facts, or you just want to remind yourself ahead of your next pub quiz, here's everything you need to know about the Duke of Cambridge himself.

How old is Prince William?

Prince William is 38 years old, and was born on 21 June 1982 at St. Mary's Hospital in London, as is usually the case for members of the Royal Family. That also makes his star sign Cancer, which means he is thought to be sensitive and loyal.

Prince William's parents are, of course, the late Princess Diana and Prince Charles, who is first in line to the throne and whom William will most likely succeed.

What is Prince William's net worth?

As of May 2020, Prince William was thought to be worth just over £30 million. There are a lot of different aspects to his wealth, so we'll break it down...

First of all, Queen Elizabeth's mum, the Queen Mother (William's great-grandma) left £6 million for Princes William and Harry to split when they each turned 21. However, Harry actually received more for not becoming sovereign, according to The Guardian.

Another £8 million of the Queen Mother's money will also be split between William and Harry when they each turn 40. Meanwhile, Princess Diana reportedly left Prince William a further £7.9 million ($10 million), and he's thought to have received the full sum at age 30, according to Forbes.

Plus, William earned a sizeable salary of around £55,000 as a flight lieutenant with the Royal Air Force. And, as a 'working Royal' the Sovereign Grant helps cover his expenses.

William is also set to inherit the Duchy of Cornwall, currently owned by Prince Charles, which is the Royals' private portfolio of properties and which funds "the public, private and charitable activities" of Prince Charles and his children. The Duchy of Cornwall was most recently valued at £22.2 million, so it's definitely not to be frowned upon.

Plus, once he becomes King, William will inherit all of the Queen's wealth, too.

What jobs has Prince William had?

Prince William studied Geography at St Andrews University in Scotland, after switching courses from Art History, and he graduated with a 2:1 (even Princes don't always get a First).

Post-uni, he trained at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and was then commissioned as an officer in the Blues and Royals division of the Household Cavalry.

After this, William went on to train and work in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, and then trained to become a military helicopter pilot. Between 2015 and 2017 he worked as a pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and donated his full salary to the EAAA charity. However, he left the job in July 2017 to take a more active role in Royal duties on behalf of the Queen.

Where did Prince William meet Kate Middleton?

Prince William and Kate Middleton first met when they were students at St Andrews University in Scotland, where they were both studying Art History before William switched courses. William started University in 2001, but the couple didn't officially begin dating until 2003. They lived together with two other friends while at University until they graduated in 2005.

Wills and Kate did have a short break from their relationship in 2007, but they got back together soon after and eventually ended up marrying in 2011.

How many children does Prince William have?

Prince William and Kate Middleton have three children together: Prince George, who's just turned seven, Princess Charlotte, age five, and Prince Louis who is just two years old.

The couple's three children often appear in photos on the Kensington Royal Instagram account, and as they get older we're sure we'll see them become more and more involved in public life.

Where does Prince William live?

William and Kate live together with their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis in Kensington Palace in London. Residing in Apartment 1a, their four-storey home includes three bedroom suites, three bathrooms and five reception rooms.

The couple also owns a property in Norfolk, Anmer Hall, which was gifted to them by the Queen after their wedding. The family used to live there full-time, and now often retreat to their country home - which is part of the Sandringham Estate - when they can around their busy schedules. It's where they spent lockdown, home-schooling the children during the coronavirus pandemic.

When will Prince William become King?

Prince William is the second in line to the throne, after his father Prince Charles. When the Queen dies, Prince Charles will automatically become the King. And Prince William will then become King once Charles dies.

Alternatively, however, if Charles chooses to abdicate and renounce the throne, then the role of King would be passed on to William. The other potential outcome is that Prince Charles, who is 71, dies before Queen Elizabeth, who is 94, in which case William would become King once the Queen dies.
